The role of the rheumatologist is to diagnose (detect), treat and medically manage patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. These health problems affect the joints, muscles, bones and sometimes other internal organs (e.g., kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, brain).
A rheumatologist aims to help patients with rheumatic disease to have the best possible quality of life.

We understand that patients often benefit from a holistic approach where the patient can be considered as a whole.
In the rheumatology department the Medical and Nursing Team work together with members of the Multidisplinary Care Team- which includes physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Pharmacists and occupational therapists, so that our patients can benefit from their different types of expertise.
We are involved in a variety studies, including observational studies looking at the outcomes of patients on established treatments and trialling new agents that have yet to be made generally available on the NHS. The department has conducted some small single-centre studies, but most often is involved in large multi-centre national and sometimes international studies. We are always actively looking for patients to participate in our clinical trials and if you are interested in participating, please ask.
