The Portsmouth Liver Centre provides specialist care to people with liver conditions living in Portsmouth and it's surrounding area.
We offer a comprehensive service which includes:
- Specialist inpatient and outpatient care for patients with complex liver disease
- Community and hospital based Viral hepatitis treatment service
- One stop clinics for NAFLD and Jaundice assessment
- Locally based satellite Liver Transplant Clinic with the Royal Free Transplant Centre
- Virtual Clinic monitoring of patients with Autoimmune liver disease
- Follow up assessment clinics for patients with advanced liver disease facilitating early hospital discharge and to optimise medical management
- Nurse led Paracentesis service
- Transient elastography (Fibroscan evaluation to determine severity of liver damage)
- Comprehensive hepatology clinical research trials programme
- Inpatient support for patients in hospital with an alcohol related problem as well as inpatient support for patients in hospital who have been screened and identified as a high risk or dependent drinker.
- Outpatient alcohol nurse clinic to support patients with an identified health providing nurse specialist intervention and detox from alcohol where appropriate.
- TIPSS service in conjunction with Department of Radiology
- NHS England specially commissioned service for advanced therapeutics of Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC).
- Multidisciplinary management of liver and biliary cancers

Patients are referred via GP using e-Referral.
Patients with first presentation of ascites or other hepatic decompensation should be discussed with SpR for hepatology +/- hospital admission.
Self referral to viral hepatitis clinics at outreach recovery hubs.
Alcohol Specialist Nurse Service – Outpatient service: patients can be referred by their GP/consultant via email, phone call or letter. Any patients referred with no urgent health need will need to access the community teams who will liaise with the ASN S for referral if needed.
