This service provides care for women who experience pain/bleeding in early pregnancy between six and 12 weeks’ gestation.
This service provides care for women who experience pain/bleeding in early pregnancy between six and 12 weeks’ gestation. Women may also be referred to the unit if they are pregnant and have a previous history of recurrent miscarriage, molar or ectopic pregnancy.
Conditions we treat
The service provides specialist care for the following:
- Assessment of women with bleeding and/or pain in early pregnancy
- Diagnosis and subsequent management of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy
- Recurrent miscarriage (defined as three or more consecutive miscarriages)
- Suspected or previous history of molar pregnancy
Treatments we offer
Where medically appropriate, the unit offers a range of management options for conditions in early pregnancy including:
- Conservative, medical and surgical management of miscarriage.
- Management of ectopic pregnancy: medical, surgical and conservative management.
Our department is open 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) and on Saturday mornings between 8am and 12pm.

The unit accepts referrals from GP's, midwives, the antenatal clinic and via the Emergency Department.
Private scan providers can refer to EPAU along with midwives, GPs, the Emergency Department and the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
