The Endocrine Department offers a range of services to investigate, diagnose and treat patients with endocrine disorders. People can be referred to the department by their GP or another hospital consultant.
People will usually receive an appointment to be seen by a consultant in a clinic first. Most clinics are held at Queen Alexandra Hospital. If the consultant feels it would be helpful to have investigations performed before the appointments these will be arranged.
As well as clinics where people with a variety of endocrine conditions can be seen, the department also runs specialised endocrine clinics.
These clinics are led by consultants but you may be seen by a specialist registrar or specialist endocrine nurse.

Nurse led appointments:
- Hydrocortisone Education - to teach people about steroid replacement and how to manage their medication during illness and stress. You may find it helpful to have relatives attend.
- Growth Hormone replacement - for dose monitoring.
- Education on administration of specialist endocrine drugs for example treating resistant acromegaly.
- Radioiodine Follow-up clinic - for people who have received radioiodine treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Our endocrine nurse specialists (ENS) are involved in the investigation and care of patients who attend the endocrine department.
Patients will often require specialised dynamic function tests to assess their hormone production. The tests are performed by an Endocrine Nurse Specialist with medical support if necessary.
You may be asked to complete a blood test prior to your appointment - the results can sometimes take several weeks to come back.
