Our Dermatology team treats patients with a wide variety of skin, hair and nail conditions.
We provide a range of treatments for our patient’s skin conditions including day treatments and dressings, specialised light therapy, prescribing medications including biologic treatments. In addition, we run outpatient clinics at the community hospitals in Fareham, Gosport and Petersfield, as well as treating inpatients at QA Hospital admitted with skin problems.
In our department we perform skin surgery under local anaesthetic, primarily for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers. We work closely with our colleagues in Surgery and Oncology to treat advanced skin cancers with oncology treatments (immunotherapy/chemotherapy) and larger surgery procedures under general anaesthetic.
Some forms of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma require surgical treatments. These range from small biopsies to large excisions, and complex Mohs micrographic surgery. Most of our surgery and Mohs procedures are performed at Portsmouth Dermatology Centre at St Mary's, but we also carry out these procedures in Fareham, Gosport and Petersfield.
We have onsite photographers at St Mary’s, and work with the Medical Imaging Team at QA Hospital, sending patients there who require mole mapping. Please note you may be asked for your consent for photographs to be taken of your skin problem when you attend your appointment, to aid your treatment and any follow-up required.
Our general Dermatology clinics help patients in the management of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer, and other common conditions.

Our department is a major dermatology teaching centre and therefore you may be seen by a dermatology Specialist Registrar. You may also see Specialist Pharmacists, other trainee doctors and nurses, and medical students.
We do not do cosmetic work and will not remove benign moles or cysts, for example. We have no laser facilities (the closest NHS provider of lasers is at Salisbury Hospital) and are not commissioned to treat warts or molluscum contagiosum, or other benign conditions.
