The Stoma Care department offer pre and post operative advice to anyone who is living with a bowel stoma or is about to undergo surgery that may result in one. The stoma care nurse specialists (SCN) are experienced registered nurses, trained to support and advise on all stoma related matters. The team see patients both whilst in hospital and in outpatient’s clinic after discharge.
*Please note that urostomy patients are looked after by a separate team. Please phone the urology outpatients service for more details.
What we offer:
- Pre-operative counselling & advice regarding life with a stoma – we will see any patient undergoing surgery that may result in a stoma
- Have an appropriately positioned stoma, sited by a trained SCN
- Individual daily teaching for new stoma patients (ward staff may assist in absence of SCN) until confident to manage independently
- Be discharged from hospital only once competent and confident managing independently / having adequate support at home (including teaching family / arranging of care packages if required)
- Be assisted with choosing suitable stoma products, arranging of prescription & delivery
- Be followed up by SCN within 14 days of discharge from hospital
- Referred to local stoma care team if from out of area
- Regular clinic appointments over course of the first year – usually 2 weeks, 6 weeks & 3 months. 6 months & 1 year post-op appointments (can be over the phone)
- Home visits can be arranged for individuals that are house-bound
- Continual support, via telephone or face to face appointment, for advice and guidance
- Ileo-anal pouch care
- Enterocutaneous fistula management.

The following information will be extremely helpful:
- Patient details such as name, date of birth, hospital / NHS number
- Reason for referral such as ‘sore skin’, ‘regular leaks’ etc
- What type of stoma the patient has, colostomy or ileostomy
- What products are being used currently
- Any other relevant information such as output volume / consistency
For issues such as severe abdominal pain / vomiting / bleeding that will not stop – seek immediate medical advice from GP / 111 / 999.
