Queen Alexandra Hospital is located just on the hill slopes of Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth. It is well served by buses in the local area and Cosham rail station, and is easily accessed by car from both the M27 and A3(M).

For people driving to the hospital please be aware that parking on site is limited and is chargeable. The hospital's main two car parks are located near the main entrance and the north entrance. Please check whether you are parked in an area that requires you to pay in advance or on exit. Concessions are available for blue badge holders (see below). Before you arrive at the hospital please check the location of your appointment to see which entrance will be most convenient.
From the west
Follow the M27 and use exit 12 (Cosham).At the traffic lights, follow the road straight ahead (Southampton Road) towards Cosham. Turn left at the second set of traffic lights. At the traffic lights take the exit road left into Sevenoaks Road and bear right into the hospital main entrance.The multi-storey car park will be on the left. The north car park is clearly signposted.
From the north
Follow the A3M south to Junction 5.At the motorway roundabout take the third exit marked for Drayton/Cosham.Follow this road until you reach the roundabout (Cosham).Proceed straight across into Southampton Road.At the first set of traffic lights turn right into Sevenoaks Road and bear right into the hospital main entrance.The multi-storey car park will be on the left. The north car park is clearly signposted.
From the east
Follow the A27 westbound until you reach the junction marked Cosham. At the roundabout take the third exit marked for A3 Cosham (Northern Road).Follow this road until you reach a further roundabout (Cosham).Proceed straight across remaining on A3 Northern Road.At the next roundabout take the first exit into Southampton Road.At the first set of traffic lights turn right into Sevenoaks Road and bear right into the hospital main entrance.The multi-storey car park will be on the left. The north car park is clearly signposted.
By bus
Services run frequently from Portsmouth city centre and surrounding areas, with some buses stopping within the hospital grounds and may be displayed on timetables as "Queen Alexandra Hospital". Other buses stop near the hospital and you should look for stops near Cosham if possible.
Queen Alexandra Hospital is served by the following bus services:
- Direct services to the main entrance ‘QA Hospital Main’: Routes 2,3,7,8,18 and 20
- Direct services to the north entrance ‘QA Hospital North’: Routes 7,8 and 20
- Services to the ‘QA steps’ (A3 London Road): Routes 621, SD4, SD5
- Services to the Red Lion, Cosham: Routes 23 and 621

Please note there are not yet any dedicated cycle paths which lead directly to the hospital, so be prepared to use the roads or dismount and walk the last few metres.
Members of the public riding their bicycle to Queen Alexandra Hospital can leave it in one of more than 100 racks. The bike areas are situated in the multi-storey car park and outside the North Entrance, Emergency Department and the Paediatric Emergency Department.
Bicycles are left at the owner’s own risk.
The Queen Alexandra Hospital is fully accessible for disabled people.
Doors and corridors are wide enough for wheelchairs, as are the main, north and east entrances. Desks and counters in public areas will have a lower section for wheelchair users.
Signage around the hospital is appropriately colour coded for people with visual impairment and the lifts have speakers which notify you of which floor you are on.
As part of the current development works, there will be three Changing Places facilities available.
Wheelchairs
For those who need wheelchairs when they arrive, they are available at various locations around the hospital including the main and north entrances and in the multi-story car park. You will need to insert a pound coin to release the wheelchair from a 'train' of other wheelchairs. You will be able to reclaim your money when you return the wheelchair.
Car parking rates
Patients and visitors who need to attend the hospital or visit relatives over a longer period of time can benefit from a reduced parking charge rate. This is at the discretion of the ward or clinic sister.
Queen Alexandra Hospital parking charges as of May 2019:
- Up to 1.5h £2.00
- Up to 2.5h £3.20
- Up to 3.5h £4.60
- Up to 4.5h £5.70
- Up to 6h £8.20
- Up to 8h £10.70
- Up to 12h £12.50
- 12-24h £18.20
Patients and visitors using either the main or north car parks on the Queen Alexandra Hospital site are entitled to 15 minutes free parking on arrival. After this time the above car parking rates apply.
To give patients and visitors greater flexibility, the Trust has introduced the ability to pay for parking by phone using RingGo (from 18 November 2024). This means that if you wish to extend your parking time, you will be able to do it from your phone and without the need to return to your car and purchase another ticket. You can also pay using one of our pay machines, that can take cash, card or contactless, as well as using your smartphone.
Please be aware that automatic number plate recognition is in operation in our car parks.
Concession rates
Concession rates are available to visitors who meet a specific criteria for daily or fixed term periods. These include
- patients undergoing care such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and dialysis at least three times a month for a minimum of three months
- a parent accompanying a child on admission for overnight stay or long-term basis
- a close relative/partner who is helping with ongoing care such as washing and feeding.
These concession passes are issues by the senior person in charge of the department/ward and need to be validated. Please speak to the ward team if you aren't sure whether you are eligible.
Main entrance car park
Follow H signage for Queen Alexandra Hospital main entrance, then follow signs to the main entrance car park.
North car park
The multi-storey North Car Park can be accessed via the Main entrance and the Southwick Gate entrance. Electric vehicle charging points are also available in the North car park.
The North Entrance at QA Hospital will be closed from 4 June 2024 as work to redevelop it takes place. Please find more information here. This work will not affect the North Car Park, which remains open as usual.
Blue Badge parking
There are disabled parking spaces at Queen Alexandra Hospital situated in both multi-storey car parks as well as by the North Entrance, Emergency Department and East Entrance. All Blue Badge Holders will have access to free parking.
- If you have parked in either of the multi-storey car parks please leave your clock in your car. When you are leaving the hospital, please ensure to get your parking validated at either, main reception, oncology reception, rehabilitation reception or the Cashier Office (C Level).
- If you have parked in a Disabled Pay & Display space, you can have up to 3 hours free parking by displaying your blue badge and clock in your car. Please read the signage on the parking meters for information about the requirements for your vehicle. It is your responsibility to register your vehicle when this is required.
Portsmouth City Council is responsible for the issue of all blue badges in Portsmouth, which covers all postcodes between PO1 and PO6. If you live outside of this area, for example in Waterlooville, Fareham or Gosport, you will need to contact Hampshire County Council to apply for a Blue Badge.
The blue badge scheme provides a national range of parking concessions for disabled people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport.
