Portsmouth patients encouraged to nominate their healthcare heroes for annual Trust awards

Patients, carers and families who have received excellent care and support at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) can help us celebrate the teams and individuals who have made a personal difference to them.  

The Patient Choice Award is part of PHU’s annual Proud To Be PHU Awards and gives people the opportunity to nominate their unsung heroes and recognise the incredible work our staff do. 

Nominations are now open for this category and can be made by patients who have attended any of our sites including Queen Alexandra Hospital as an inpatient or outpatient. Loved ones of patients and carers can also nominate staff who they feel have made a real difference to their experience. 

Last year, the Paediatric Oncology Team received the Patient Choice Award after being nominated by Rosie, the mum of a child they have been caring for since she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2021. Rosie said, “This wonderful and dedicated team have put our daughter at the centre of every encounter and have made her feel safe in the scariest of circumstances.” 

Through video message on the night of the awards, Rosie shared how the team brought vital qualities such as laughter, understanding and a listening ear when they needed it most. She added, “Their kindness, humour, compassion, professionalism, pragmatism, and patience have made this experience more bearable for all of us. We are so thankful for all the team have done to help get us through a challenging few years.” 

Penny Emerit, Chief Executive at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said: “The Proud To Be PHU Awards is such a special event that gives us the opportunity to thank our staff and recognise the dedication and commitment they bring to work every single day.   

“All of the categories in our awards are special, but to be nominated by patients or their families is a wonderful reflection of the outstanding care delivered by our teams. Being able to hear how their actions have had a positive impact on the experience of our patients is something I know we all value.”

Nominations close on 1 August 2024 before going through a judging process to decide our five finalists. These five nominations will then be opened to a public vote, where you will have the chance to vote for our winner.  

The winners will be announced at the Trust’s Proud to be PHU Awards which take place later this year.
