The Therapeutic Radiography team at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust has won the Society of Radiographer 2023 Regional Team of the Year: South East.
The awards celebrates individuals, teams, representatives and students from across the UK who have made difference to patient care, service delivery, membership representation and those who have excelled academically.
The team at PHU were nominated for the award for their passion and commitment to transforming the service to meet higher patient demands following the COVID-19 pandemic.
With approximately 50 staff members, the department covers patients from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex, offering radiotherapy services as well as brachytherapy, superficial and orthovoltage services.
Chief Nurse Liz Rix, who leads the professional development of Allied Health Professionals at PHU, said: “We are thrilled that our Therapeutic Radiography team has been recognised in this year’s Society of Radiographers awards and it shows the hard work and dedication of our multi-disciplinary team.”
This year the team also celebrated treating its 100th SABR lung patient after only introducing the service two years ago. The highly specialised radiotherapy treatment aims to target tumours in the early stages with high doses of radiotherapy delivered over a shorter period of time.
Plans are in place to deliver this treatment for spine, liver and adrenal patients, while it has already been introduce for patients with intermediate bone cancer.
Other innovations that the team have put in place over the last 18 months include moving to paperless patient treatment pathways to improve flow and adding career development pathways through consultant radiographer roles.
Radiographer Georgie West said: “Our team are very proud to receive the award for Society of Radiographers South East Regional Team of the Year.
“We have such an amazing team in the Radiotherapy Department, and this is reflected in the hard work we have achieved over the past year.”
